An assassination attempt against Iraqi Prime Minister Mustafa Al-Kadhimi

The assassination attempt against Iraqi Prime Minister Mustafa Al-Kadhimi is another reminder of one of the most imminent threats to protected VIPs – use of drones armed with explosives.

On the night of November 6, an explosives-laden drone, most likely operated by Iranian-Shiite militias in Iraq, hit the prime minister's residence and injured several security guards. The PM was evacuated unharmed.

The modern world of security must be able to adapt to new types of aerial threats. An effective security apparatus must include technologies that are able to detect and down drones, and cannot settle for a team of human security guards, no matter how skilled.

Have security organizations in the West realized it already? Are they prepared to address this threat?
